Our training aims to give staff a thorough understanding of the underlying impairment. The Trust recognises that the staff role is crucial in providing an interface with the world.

Autism Awareness Training

Our Family Support service offer Autism Awareness Workshops 4 times a year, other sessions are booked on an individual / group / employer basis as requested.  These workshops are aimed at providing tips, advice, a basic understanding of autism and helping people with autism within the work place.

​

The training provided for all staff incorporates specialist training in skills for assessing the function of behaviour, behavioural intervention techniques, goal setting, skill teaching for individuals on the autism spectrum and communication skills. This is in addition to providing the necessary statutory required training such as first aid, health and safety and food and hygiene.

In particular, staff need skills and abilities to be able to:

  • Understand and interpret the verbal or non-verbal communications of individuals on the autism spectrum.

  • Translate situations, events and concepts into language that can be understood and grasped by individuals on the autism spectrum.

  • Be sensitive in the recognition of anxiety level.

  • Manage and reduce challenging behaviour.

  • Recognise the value of repetitive reinforcement and have the ability to make careful use of structure in order to counteract lack of motivation.

  • Our training programme ensures that we conform to CQC requirements and the National Care Framework with regards to induction and ongoing training.

In house training includes:

  • Positive Behaviour Support, Functional analysis and multi element model

  • Sensory awareness

  • Communication techniques and visual aids

  • Teaching skills (functionally equivalent to a behaviour or coping / tolerance skills)

  • Studio III training – low arousal theory and non-aversive physical intervention PASADD assessment screening of mental health symptoms in people with a developmental disability

  • Speech and Language assessments In house coaching in implementing communication systems                           (e.g. Picture Exchange Communication System, social stories).

The Trust provides autism training for parents and professionals.

Training

The Trust provides an ongoing staff-training programme to reinforce and update

the necessary staff skills to achieve its aims.
